Lynden Beesley

Lynden Beesley has made the Okanagan her home. Gradually Lynden’s new work has evolved to include the flora and fauna of this verdant valley. Her European identity with its myth and folkloric backdrop is now interlaced with imagery which includes her Canadian habitat and values. Lynden continues to work in Bronze Sculpture and limited edition Hand Pulled Prints.

Judy Burns

When I was going to school one of my instructors encouraged me to push myself, to accept my way of seeing, which I have come to understand is somewhat skewed particularly through a camera lens.

I have come to accept that as my world of abstraction.

That world could be reality slightly off kilter using minimalism, or it could be using or altering perspective. The modifications whether through the camera lens or later on canvas provide my abstract reality. Regardless, realizing my eye is unique and how I use that uniqueness to express what I see is a very valuable attribute.

My Journey into Light, Color, Motion, Reflection and Mystery is propelled by using Glass as the vehicle. Sounds a bit complex, but fusing glass allows all of these factors to be present at any one time. It is a feast of choice for the artist to be able to manipulate and create an artwork that features so many sensory effects.   My new fused pieces will be a Tribute to the Group of Seven's Art; and through this study, it has allowed me to focus attention on their interpretation of color and movement in the Canadian landscape.

Beads have been strung into the fabric of human identity and spirituality; they connect and distinguish peoples and cultures throughout history.

I am a contemporary glass bead maker.  I am inspired by the colors, textures, shapes, and the malleability and immutability of glass.  I like that my beads will convey my perception of beauty, my playfulness and my skill long after I am gone.

I love working with this mysterious and paradoxical substance: glass is both is transparent and opaque, hot and cold, fluid and solid, serendipitously giving and impatiently unforgiving, extremely fragile and extremely durable.

Beadmaking transports me to a place of alchemy and introspection, a place where there is only fire and glass.

For me, art is a way to express what is going on inside us as individuals.

I choose collage and mixed media as I find the layering process very familiar to the texture of the human kind. Most of us have many layers that we may or may not choose to reveal to the world. The process of adding or subtracting elements to a harmonious image will always intrigue me. I shall continue my creative process with curiosity as my guide.

Talk It Up

John Topham

wood turning & custom projects

John took his formal training in Fine Art at The Kootenay School of Fine Art. He taught pottery in Yukon and Labrador, with emphasis in wheelwork, hand building and glazing techniques.

In the process of evolution, his interest in turning from vertical to horizontal and an abundance of hardwoods, wood turning became his principal interest. Initially he found the challenges of wood turning somewhat challenging, but has since mastered the nuances of wood and its’ characteristics. Mentored by world-renowned Australian wood turner Richard Raffan, John developed the skills and knowledge required to produce functional pieces.

The bulk of Johns’ work is utilitarian, using local hardwood trees that have been discarded and salvaged, contemporary pieces are more frequently crafted through inspiration and motivation.

Most sales are through his studio; currently, he has work displayed in the Summerland Art Gallery and two local retail outlets. His work has been sold throughout Canada, the UK, the US, Caribbean and Europe.
